Introduction The Philippines is made up of 7,000 and more islands, many of which have been identified as karst regions and are home to complex cave systems. The archipelago has about 35,000 km² of karst terrain; approximately, it represents 8.3 percent of the country's land area. In Cebu, more than half of the total land area is karst, and is therefore home to cave systems. The caves of Alegria are part of this rich natural heritage.
